Ebook About In late August 1898, reporter Emma Cross attends the final fête of the Newport social season and discovers the party's over for a visiting prince . . . The approaching end of summer means it's time for the Harvest Festival, the last big event of the season, held by Mamie Fish, wife of millionaire tycoon Stuyvesant Fish, at their grand “cottage,” Crossways. The mansion is decked out in artificial autumn splendor and an extravagant scavenger hunt will be held. But the crowning jewel of the evening will be the guest of honor, Prince Otto of Austria. As acting editor-in-chief of the Newport Messenger, Emma had hoped to leave her days as a society reporter behind her. But at the last moment, she must fill in at the Harvest Festival. With nearly every eligible daughter of Newport high society in attendance, Emma can almost hear romantic dreams shattering like glass slippers when the prince finally appears—as a corpse in the garden. The prince was stabbed in the same manner as another man recently found on nearby Bailey's Beach, who strongly resembles a relation of Emma's presumed dead for nearly thirty years. It’s up to Emma to find a connection between the two victims—before a killer slips away like the fading summer . . . “Another tricky mystery set against the backdrop of some great real-life mansions.”—Kirkus ReviewsBook Murder at Crossways (A Gilded Newport Mystery Book 7) Review :
Emma Cross, the Editor-In-Chief of the Newport Messenger and a relative of the Vanderbilt are well known in Newport. While her job now doesn’t require writing the society page she still mingles with the Upper Crust. At the beach with her Aunt Alice and Cornelius Vanderbilt a body washes up and Emma feels like she knows who it might be the father of her half-brother Brady. Going to the Fall Festival Ball when guest of honor is to be Prince Otto of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is found murdered in the garden, further adds to Emma’s search for the killer. This story is a little different in Mamie Fish the owner of the home gets out and investigates with Emma. This is a wonderful series, the author makes you feel like you are right there at the time of the novel in those beautiful homes of Newport. I go to Newport nearly every year, and I look forward to these books almost as much as those trips. I just wish these were released early enough in the summer I could take them with me to Newport! :) This wasn't my favorite in the series, and I think it started off a little slow, but it picked right back up, and continued just as good as the other books in the series.I think it's worth mentioning that the artwork used for the covers of these books is fantastic, and part of the reason I started the series in the first place. Also, Alyssa does a really great job with factual historical characters that populate the book. I've read a lot of biographies/memoirs/history on Newport and The Gilded Age, and though these are fiction the characters personalities are quite what they are supposed to have really been like (a la Alice Vanderbilt, Mamie Fish, Caroline Astor, etc.) I enjoy it all, and look forward to the next in the series. It's fun to find out which mansion it will take place in!
